Installing Anaconda and Jupyter Notebook on MacOS

Hi guys! It’s Althaf, and today we’re going to take you on an exciting journey to explore Anaconda python and Jupyter Notebook. We’ll show you a step-by-step guide to installing Anaconda on your Mac machine and give you a beginner’s introduction to Jupyter Notebook.

Anaconda and Jupyter Notebook: A Brief Overview

So, let me give you guys a quick intro on what Anaconda python and Jupyter Notebook are before we dive into the installation process. Anaconda: Anaconda python is an open-source distribution of Python and R programming languages for data science  and machine learning tasks. It comes with pre-installed libraries and tools that are commonly used in these fields, making it a popular choice among data scientists and analysts.

Jupyter Notebook: Jupyter Notebook is an open-source web application that allows you to create and share documents that contain live code, equations, visualizations, and narrative text. It supports many programming languages, including Python, R, and Julia, and is widely used in data science, research, and education.

Alrighty, now that we have the introductions out of the way, let’s dive right into the installation process.

Installing Anaconda on MacOS

Step 1:

Head over to the official Anaconda website’s download page and select the appropriate Mac version. when you’re downloading Anaconda, I recommend going with the latest Python 3.6 version, unless there is a specific reason for you to use a different version.

Step 2:

After downloading the Anaconda python installer, you can find it in your system’s Downloads folder. Simply double-click on the installer to start the installation process.

Step 3:

Once you start the installation process, you will be prompted with a series of installation steps to follow.

When the window shown below pops up on your screen, click on the ‘Continue’ button for the introduction, read me and licence agreement to proceed to the next step.

Choose the destination type as ‘Install for me only’, which is the recommended option for Anaconda python, unless you have a specific reason to change it. Once selected, click ‘Continue

Note: If you encounter any errors during this step, simply reselect the ‘Install for me only’ option and click on ‘Continue’ again.

Step 5:

Take note of the installation location, and then click on the ‘Install‘ button to start the installation process.

Step 6:

After clicking on ‘Install’, a prompt will appear on your device asking for your system username and password. This is a security protocol for Mac. Enter your system username and password, and then click on ‘Install Software’ to proceed.

Step 7:

The installation procedure may take a couple of minutes, so feel free to grab a cup of coffee while you wait. Once the installation is successful, a window similar to the one shown below will appear on your screen. Click on ‘close’, and you’re all set to go!

Anaconda navigator:

Anaconda Navigator is a graphical interface software that allows you to launch, install, and work with various applications on your Anaconda. It’s usually installed along with Anaconda. To open Anaconda Navigator on macOS, search for it by Simply clicking on the magnifying glass icon on the top right corner of your screen, type in ‘Anaconda Navigator’ and press enter.

Jupyter Notebook:

In the Navigator window, click on the ‘Launch‘ button under the Jupyter Notebook tile.

This will open up a new tab in your default web browser, showing the Jupyter Notebook dashboard.

Writing a python Script on Jupyter Notebook:

  1. To initiate a new notebook in the Anaconda python Jupyter Notebook interface, you need to click on the “New” button located in the top-right corner and then choose the desired kernel, such as “Python 3” or any other available option.
  2. Once you’ve created a new notebook, you can start writing code in the cells. To run a cell, click the “Run” button in the toolbar or press “Shift + Enter“.

3. You can add new cells by clicking the “+” button in the toolbar, and you can delete cells by selecting them and clicking the “scissors” button.

4. You can save your notebook by clicking “File” in the menu bar and selecting “Save and Checkpoint“. This will create a new file with the extension “.Ipynb”.

5. When you’re finished working on your notebook, you can close the tab in your web browser to shut down the Jupyter Notebook server.

That’s it! With these simple steps, you should be able to install Anaconda and start using Jupyter Notebook on your Mac operating system.
